Local police noted that a collapse occurred on a gangway of a ferry docking at Sapelo Island in the city of McIntosh, where members of the local Gullah-Geechee community had gathered for a fall festival, causing many people to fall into the water.

It was stated that at least 7 people lost their lives due to the accident, many injured were taken to hospitals, and search and rescue operations are ongoing.
