Attempted to smuggle cocaine in embassy vehicle: Caught at Kapıkule!

Two individuals working as drivers for the Brazilian and Qatari embassies in Sofia were caught transporting 58 kilograms of cocaine in a vehicle belonging to the Brazilian Embassy in Sofia. The cocaine, which was obtained in Bulgaria, was seized during a search conducted at the Kapıkule border gate on the morning of October 20. 

According to a report by Dinçer Gökçe from HalkTV; Petar Zdravkov Yordanov (52), who stated that he worked as a driver at the Qatari Embassy, said he received the two bags full of cocaine from a person standing on the side of the road before arriving at Kapıkule. 

"I WAS GOING TO RECEIVE 4,500 LIRA IN EXCHANGE FOR TAKING THE BAGS"

In the continuation of his statement, Yordanov said, "When I asked what was inside the bags, he said they were personal belongings. I was going to receive 300 Leva (4,500 TL) in exchange for taking the bags. I was going to receive the agreed-upon money after crossing the bags into Turkey. I had no information about the location where I would receive the money."

Explaining that the person who gave him the bags full of cocaine was about 45 years old and spoke Bulgarian, Yordanov also shared the physical description of this person with the Customs Enforcement teams.

"I DID NOT THINK THERE WAS ANYTHING OBJECTIONABLE"

The other suspect, Kiril Vasilev Dimitrov (54), who stated that he had been working as a driver at the Brazilian Embassy for 8 years, said in his statement that he had no connection to the bags full of cocaine. Explaining that they waited for about 2 minutes at the place where Petar Zdravkov Yordanov asked him to stop, Dimitrov said, "Petar got out of the vehicle at the place where we stopped; he put something in the trunk of the vehicle within two minutes. He also put a bag behind the seat where I was sitting. I did not see the person he got the bag from or the location. I was a little suspicious because the place we were at was on the side of the road. However, since Petar and I do the same job, I did not think there was anything objectionable," he said.
