AK Party council member Savaş Akyüz has been elected to replace Balışeyh Mayor Hilmi Şen, who lost his life in an armed attack carried out by his cousin in Kırıkkale last week.

Two candidates competed in the vote held at the Balışeyh Municipal Council meeting hall. Akyüz became the new mayor with 5 votes, while the other candidate, AK Party Municipal Council Member Ömer Sancak, received 4 votes.

Speaking after being elected mayor, Savaş Akyüz emphasized that they had gone through a fair election process and said, "I will perform my duties in the best possible way. I would like to thank all my colleagues who supported me." The election, held in the council hall where extensive security measures were taken, was closed to the press.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In the murder incident that took place in the TOKİ area on November 4, Mayor Hilmi Şen was seriously injured in an armed attack on his official vehicle while he was on his way to inspect infrastructure works. Mayor Şen was targeted alongside his driver Mikayil Çelikkol (40), Ömer Şengül (42), and Koray Kaya (45) as a result of an attack by his cousin Erdem Şen, with whom he had a feud.

Mayor Şen and his driver Çelikkol, who were taken to the hospital with injuries, lost their lives at the Yüksek İhtisas Hospital. Hilmi Şen had resigned from the New Welfare Party (Yeniden Refah Partisi) about 3 months ago.
