Ban after ban in Taksim on the 13th anniversary of Gezi
Ahead of a press statement announced to be held in Taksim for the 13th anniversary of the Gezi Resistance, a series of restrictive measures were taken. While the Istanbul Governor's Office closed certain metro and transportation lines, the Beyoğlu District Governorate banned all demonstrations and events in open spaces across the district for 24 hours.

Taksim Solidarity, along with various political parties and non-governmental organizations, announced that a press statement would be held in Taksim to mark the 13th anniversary of the Gezi Resistance. Following the call, restrictions were imposed on certain transportation lines by the decision of the Istanbul Governor's Office.
Initially, the Taksim Metro Station and several lines were closed to passenger use, and subsequently, the Beyoğlu District Governorate announced that it had decided to ban demonstrations and events in the district.
The following statement was issued by Metro Istanbul:
“In accordance with the decision taken by the Istanbul Governor's Office, as of 13:00 today and until further notice;
The Taksim station of our M2 Yenikapı-Hacıosman Metro Line,
The F1 Taksim-Kabataş Funicular, and
Our TF1 Maçka-Taşkışla Cable Car Line will be closed to operations.
The Istiklal Street exit of our Şişhane station will be closed to passenger use. Our passengers may use the other entrances and exits of the station.
Our vehicles will continue their journeys without stopping at the Taksim station.”
24-HOUR BAN IN BEYOĞLU
Following the transportation measures, the Beyoğlu District Governorate announced that all events such as meetings, demonstration marches, press statements, distribution of leaflets, and sit-in protests in all open spaces in the district have been banned for 24 hours.
The following statements were used in the Governorate's announcement:
“It has been understood that calls for gatherings in Taksim and Tünel Square within our jurisdiction were made via certain social media accounts for 19:00 on 31.05.2026.
Evaluating that the gatherings intended to be held in our district could lead to actions that might disrupt public order and social peace, pursuant to Article 17 of the Law on Meetings and Demonstration Marches No. 2911 and Article 32/ç of the Provincial Administration Law No. 5442; all events such as meetings, demonstration marches, press statements, distribution of leaflets, and sit-in protests in all open spaces within our jurisdiction have been BANNED by our District Governorate for 24 hours, starting from 00:01 on 31.05.2026.”
