Behind the scenes: Has the departure tax hike been shelved?
Following growing backlash against a proposal to increase the international departure tax to 3,000 Turkish Lira as part of a tax package expected to be enacted before Parliament goes into recess, new alternatives are being considered. Government sources, stating that the current 150 lira fee does not align with economic realities, said the regulation would be postponed until October.

Discussions regarding the potential increase of the international departure tax from 150 lira to 3,000 lira have also brought up concerns about "restrictions on freedom of travel."
For the international departure tax, which is one of the most debated topics in the new tax package, the initial figure proposed was 1,500 lira, followed by a 3,000 lira proposal from the Revenue Administration (GİB).
According to a report by Yücel Kayaoğlu from Türkiye newspaper, the issue was revisited during meetings attended by group management and relevant ministries.
Postponing the regulation regarding the increase for the time being has also come to the agenda.
It was stated that the proposals on the table will be clarified following evaluations at the cabinet meeting to be held next week.
