Boğaziçi University's first elected rector denied entry to campus: Statement from the new rector!

Üstün Ergüder, the first elected rector of Boğaziçi University, was denied entry to the university. Prof. Dr. Mine Eder announced the development. Boğaziçi University Rector Naci İnci stated in a post on his X account that the situation was a misunderstanding.

President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan appointed a rector to Boğaziçi University in 2021, and since then, tensions at the school have not subsided.

The school's first rector to take office through an election, Prof. Dr. Üstün Ergüder, was denied entry to the campus.

Prof. Dr. Mine Eder announced that Ergüder, who served as rector between 1992 and 2000 and spent 50 years at Boğaziçi University, was unable to enter the school:

"I just learned that our professor Üstün Ergüder, who dedicated 50 years of his life to Boğaziçi University, including his tenure as rector between 1992 and 2000, was not allowed onto the campus. Shame on you! For those who don't know, he is the first elected rector of Boğaziçi. And the main green square of the campus, where everyone takes photos, is named Üstün Ergüder Square..."

"DUE TO A SIMPLE MISUNDERSTANDING..."

Boğaziçi University Rector Naci İnci made a statement regarding the matter on his X account.

Stating that it was a misunderstanding, İnci said: "There is no question of restricting the entry of our former Rector and my esteemed colleague Üstün Ergüder to our university campus. Following the unfortunate incident at the campus entrance this morning due to a misunderstanding, I spoke with him and explained the situation. He received it with understanding. It is not right to draw different meanings from a simple misunderstanding."
