Galatasaray Club General Secretary Eray Yazgan has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for the crime of promoting betting and games of chance through advertising.

Additionally, Yazgan was fined 2,000 Turkish Liras, and the court decided to suspend his sentence.

WHAT WAS IN THE INDICTMENT?

The indictment stated that the advertisement was accepted on behalf of the club through a sponsorship agreement signed by Yazgan. A prison sentence of 1 to 3 years and a judicial fine of up to 3,000 days were requested for Yazgan.

Yazgan stated that he signed the agreement on behalf of both Galatasaray Sports Club and Galatasaray Sportif AŞ. In his statement, he said:

“We signed for the advertisement of the news website named Meritking.news to be used on jerseys and in various areas. We have no information that the website is related to illegal betting. Even now, there is no concrete information reflected in the public domain that the website in question is related to illegal betting.”

Stating that they had consulted the Turkish Football Federation, Yazgan said that they did not receive any response from the federation to block the advertisement. He also added:

“Our club did not derive any financial benefit from this sponsorship agreement. It is unacceptable for the Galatasaray community, which has a 119-year history, to be associated with any illegal betting or similar issues.”

Yazgan stated that the advertisement was used in the match on September 14, 2024, but after a formal notice sent by Net Holding on September 16, the agreement was suspended on September 17 and terminated on September 30.
