Evaluating the call to lay down arms by terrorist leader Abdullah Öcalan, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu stated, "Any initiative that will end terrorism and secure the blessing of our martyrs' families and our veterans is valuable and important for our country. On this occasion, we find the call valuable."

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is preparing to enter the primary election on March 23—where the CHP will determine its presidential candidate—as the sole candidate, made a statement regarding the call to lay down arms by Abdullah Öcalan, the leader of the terrorist organization PKK.

Quoting the message from CHP leader Özgür Özel on his social media account, İmamoğlu stated the following:

 "WE FIND THE CALL VALUABLE"

"Any initiative that will end terrorism and secure the blessing of our martyrs' families and our veterans is valuable and important for our country. On this occasion, we find the call valuable.

However, the responsibility does not lie with just one side; it also rests on the shoulders of those who govern this country. The real issue is for Turkey to be governed by principles that are truly democratic and in accordance with human rights and the rule of law.

The idea of the Republic describes exactly this; it unconditionally encompasses and embraces all its citizens. Together, by learning lessons from the pains of the past, we must build our common future in peace.

We will continue our struggle for a free and democratic Turkey with determination."
