The Syrian National Army (SNA) has cleared Manbij, which was under the occupation of the terrorist organization PKK/YPG, as part of the Operation Dawn of Freedom.
As part of the operation, the SNA cleared the town of Ureyme in the west of Manbij and the village of Um Dadat in the north of terrorism, and entered the district from the northern and western lines, taking control of the district.
On the first day of the operation, which was launched on December 1, the district center of Tel Rifaat was liberated from the terrorist organization PKK/YPG.
THE IMPORTANCE OF MANBIJ
Despite promises from the US and Russia, the district remained under the organization's occupation. The PKK/YPG had seized the Manbij district as a result of an attack it launched with US support between May and August 2016.
The US had promised Turkey that the PKK/YPG members would leave the district after it was cleared of the terrorist organization ISIS, but it did not fulfill this promise.
Russia also committed to removing the terrorist organization from Manbij with the agreement it reached with Turkey during the Peace Spring Operation in October 2019 and reported that the terrorists had left; however, the organization did not leave the area.
The Manbij region held central importance in the PKK/YPG's plan to open a terror corridor starting from the Syria-Iraq border and reaching the Mediterranean in the west of Syria.
Turkey had dealt a blow to the preparations for establishing a direct link between Afrin-Tel Rifaat and Manbij with the Euphrates Shield Operation in August 2016.
CONGRATULATIONS FROM THE SYRIAN INTERIM GOVERNMENT
Abdurrahman Mustafa, President of the Syrian Interim Government, congratulated the people and the Syrian National Army for liberating the city of Manbij and its countryside from the terrorist organization PKK/YPG in a post on his X social media account, describing it as a new step toward the restoration of Syria's sovereignty.
Mustafa called for completing the liberation of Syrian territory and realizing the people's aspiration for freedom and dignity.
