CHP presidential candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is currently imprisoned at Silivri Prison, released a message on the 9th anniversary of the July 15 coup attempt.

Emphasizing that no self-criticism has been made regarding FETÖ, İmamoğlu highlighted judicial independence and the rule of law, stating, "If we want to ensure that July 15 never happens again in this country, we must become a country of institutions and rules and ensure full democracy as soon as possible."

The following statements were included in the message shared from İmamoğlu's Presidential Candidate Office X account:

"July 15 is one of the darkest nights these lands have ever seen.

On that night, when the Veteran Parliament was bombed and tanks were driven over citizens, our nation came together and united, regardless of their political views. They defended democracy at the cost of their lives and did not allow the coup plotters to pass.

The strong democratic front established that night showed the whole world that the will of the people cannot be held captive by any power. But unfortunately, not even a single self-criticism has been made regarding this destructive structure, which was protected, watched over, and carefully nurtured within the state for years.

If we want to ensure that July 15 never happens again in this country, we must become a country of institutions and rules and ensure full democracy as soon as possible. We must ensure judicial independence and the rule of law immediately.

I remember our citizens who were martyred while defending democracy on July 15 with mercy. I express my gratitude to our veterans.

Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation."
