Breaking News... Massive bread price hike is imminent!

Due to rising costs, a new adjustment has been made to bread prices. Halil İbrahim Balcı, President of the Turkish Bakers Federation, announced that bread prices have changed in many cities as of today.

200-GRAM BREAD IS NOW 17.5 LIRAS

According to Balcı's statement, a new tariff has been implemented for bread, with the price per kilogram rising from 75 liras to 87 liras. Accordingly, 200-gram loaves of bread have started to be sold for 17.5 liras, and 230-gram loaves for 20 liras.

“THE PRICE HIKE DECISION BECAME MANDATORY”

Stating that the price increase planned for January had been postponed, Balcı expressed that the decision to raise prices became inevitable due to the rise in costs. In his statement, he said, “The price of bread, which was 75 liras per kilogram, began to change in many of our provinces as of April 1. It has been updated to correspond to 87 liras per kilogram. We were forced to set the price of a 200-gram loaf at 17.5 liras or a 230-gram loaf at 20 liras.”

“NO PRICE HIKE FOR 8 MONTHS”

Explaining the reasons for the hike, Balcı noted that there had been no price increase for approximately 8 months. Noting that there have been significant increases in cost items during the period since August 2025, Balcı said, “In January 2026, our employees' wages increased. In addition to the increases stemming from the minimum wage, the price of flour, our main raw material, rose by approximately 45 percent. The increase in operating expenses was also at the level of 30 percent. Under these conditions, we can say that the 16 percent increase made after 8 months is reasonable.”

Balcı stated that the adjustment planned for January was postponed to ensure that citizens would not be inconvenienced during the month of Ramadan, and that the price update was implemented after Ramadan.

Within the scope of the new price tariff, 200-gram loaves of bread have started to be sold for 17.5 liras in many provinces, primarily in Ankara, Istanbul, and Izmir.
