Following MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli's call for "the DEM Party to meet with İmralı," the DEM Party's application to the Ministry of Justice to meet with Abdullah Öcalan, the leader of the terrorist organization PKK, was approved.
It had been stated that the meeting would take place today (December 28) or tomorrow (December 29), depending on weather conditions.
According to reports by Sözcü TV, following favorable weather conditions, DEM Party Istanbul MP Sırrı Süreyya Önder and DEM Party Van MP Pervin Buldan traveled to İmralı today.
It has been learned that the meeting between terrorist leader Abdullah Öcalan and the DEM Party delegation has begun.
HOW DID THE PROCESS DEVELOP?
MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli, who shook hands with DEM Party MPs at the opening of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM), stated in his address at his party's parliamentary group meeting: "If the isolation of the terrorist leader is lifted, let him come and speak at the DEM Party group meeting in the TBMM, and declare that terrorism has completely ended and the organization has been disbanded. If he shows this resolve and determination, the path for legal arrangements regarding the use of the 'right to hope' and his benefit from it should be opened wide." He had requested that Öcalan speak in Parliament.
Shortly after this statement, Bahçeli called for permission to be granted to a DEM Party delegation to visit İmralı.
On November 26, the DEM Party applied to the Ministry of Justice to hold a meeting with the terrorist organization leader Abdullah Öcalan in İmralı.
On December 9, during budget negotiations in the TBMM, Bahçeli applauded DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan following his speech calling for a new beginning.
In his speech, Bakırhan stated, "In 2025, in the 103rd year of the Republic, we can make a new beginning. This Parliament has the chance to undertake the founding of a Democratic Republic. Let the honor of creating a country where 85 million people feel they belong belong to this Parliament."
On December 27, Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç announced that a positive response had been given to the DEM Party's request for a meeting.
