Breaking News... Menderes Municipality passes to the AKP

The election for the acting mayor of Menderes Municipality concluded in the fourth round. AKP candidate Asuman Şen was elected acting mayor with 15 votes, while YENİ Party candidate Barış Gürsoy remained at 12 votes. A fistfight broke out in the council chamber during the election process, and in the fourth round where 28 votes were cast, 1 vote was declared invalid.

Following the arrest and subsequent suspension of Menderes Mayor İlkay Çiçek, the process of electing an acting mayor in the municipal council is underway.

While the AKP, CHP, and YENİ Party fielded their own candidates in the election, independent council member Mustafa Öztürk also announced his candidacy.

The names competing for the acting mayoralty are as follows:

  • AKP: Asuman Şen
  • CHP: Mehmet Ali Akar
  • YENİ Party: Barış Gürsoy
  • Independent: Mustafa Öztürk

The Menderes Municipal Council consists of 10 members from the YENİ Party, 5 from the CHP, 11 from the People's Alliance, and 2 independent members.

12 VOTES FOR THE AKP CANDIDATE IN THE FIRST ROUND

In the first round of the acting mayor election, 28 council members cast their votes. The distribution of votes was as follows:

  • Asuman Şen: 12 votes
  • Mehmet Ali Akar: 5 votes
  • Barış Gürsoy: 10 votes
  • Mustafa Öztürk: 1 vote

As no candidate reached the required majority, the second round began.

2ND ROUND RESULTS

The results of the second round of the election have been determined:

  • AKP candidate Asuman Şen: 10 votes
  • CHP candidate Mehmet Ali Akar: 5 votes
  • YENİ Party candidate Barış Gürsoy: 9 votes
  • Independent candidate Mustafa Öztürk: 1 vote

In the second round, 3 votes were declared invalid. The CHP group left the hall, claiming their votes were invalidated. The election proceeded to the third round.

3RD ROUND RESULTS

The results of the third round of the election have been determined:

  • AKP candidate Asuman Şen: 13 votes
  • YENİ Party candidate Barış Gürsoy: 10 votes

23 votes were cast in the third round.

HALL IN TURMOIL, FISTS FLY

A major fight broke out in the hall before the fourth round. After the CHP clerk also left the hall, the fourth round could not proceed. YENİ Party members requested a break. However, an AKP council member from the People's Alliance stood in front of the door and said, 'No one can leave here, there will be no break, we will continue.' Following this, the situation in the hall became chaotic.

 

 

On the other hand, the CHP council members who had left the hall returned.

4TH ROUND RESULTS

The results of the fourth round of the election have been determined:

  • AKP candidate Asuman Şen: 15 votes
  • YENİ Party candidate Barış Gürsoy: 12 votes

28 votes were cast, 1 vote was declared invalid.

Thus, Menderes Municipality has passed to the AKP. Asuman Şen was elected acting mayor.

TENSION IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBER

Before the election, an argument broke out in the council chamber due to high attendance. Following the tension, the hall was cleared.

Only political party officials and council members are following the election.

MESSAGE OF SUPPORT FROM YENİ PARTY TO CHP

YENİ Party İzmir Provincial Chair Çağatay Güç stated that they would support the CHP if CHP candidate Mehmet Ali Akar remained in the fourth round.

Güç said, "If our candidate remains, we expect support from them as well."

It is awaited with curiosity what stance the CHP will take in the later rounds of the election.
