Breaking News: Mücahit Birinci Resigns from AKP

Mücahit Birinci, an AKP-affiliated lawyer named in documents that emerged from the İBB stock exchange scandal, has resigned from the party. The AKP had referred Birinci to its disciplinary board with a request for outright expulsion.

CHP leader Özgür Özel had shared striking documents with the public regarding the İBB stock exchange allegations on the anniversary of the AKP's founding.

According to those documents, AKP-affiliated Mücahit Birinci gave businessman Murat Kapki — who was arrested in the İBB investigation and benefited from an effective remorse provision — a confession petition to sign, and promised his release in exchange for 2 million dollars.

Mücahit Birinci, who had been referred to the AKP's disciplinary board with a request for outright expulsion, announced his resignation from the party.

As a party member who has served at every level of the organization, I respectfully inform the public that, of my own accord, I am resigning from the party membership I have always been proud of and from active politics.

Birinci's statement reads as follows:

"As a party member who has served at every level of the organization, I respectfully inform the public that, of my own accord, I am resigning from the party membership I have always been proud of and from active politics.

I will continue to regard our esteemed President as a father figure, a great Leader, and, from my perspective, the Trustee of the Faithful.

It should be known that from this point on, wherever and whenever needed, I will not hesitate for even a moment to stand by my Leader.

On this occasion, I hope to God that I will be able to spend more time with my children, my mother, and my family.

I bear no grievance against any of my brothers and sisters.

Peace be upon you."

WHAT HAPPENED?

CHP leader Özgür Özel had shared documents showing that AKP-affiliated Mücahit Birinci gave businessman Murat Kapki — who was arrested in the İBB investigation and benefited from an effective remorse provision — a confession petition to sign, and promised his release in exchange for 2 million dollars.

Following Özel's widely discussed statements, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into the matter.

The AKP had referred Birinci to its disciplinary board with a request for outright expulsion on the grounds that he "offered to provide benefits by using political influence" and made insulting posts on his social media account.

Following Özel's speech, a heated argument involving insults and profanity had broken out between pro-government journalist Nedim Şener and Mücahit Birinci.

Nedim Şener had filed a criminal complaint against Birinci.
