CHP Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık was arrested on March 23 as part of operations targeting the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Çalık's health condition became critical during his time in prison. Having previously beaten cancer twice, Çalık has lost 21 kilograms during this period.
Çalık, who was operated on recently due to suspected lymphoma and subsequently underwent an angiography procedure, was sent back to prison in handcuffs. The Council of Forensic Medicine requested a re-evaluation of the medical report provided by İzmir Katip Çelebi University Atatürk Training and Research Hospital. Following this request, Çalık was admitted to the hematology department of İzmir City Hospital.
The Istanbul Council of Forensic Medicine stated that Çalık was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in 1999, but that the disease had not recurred for 26 years. This report sparked public debate.
DECISION FOR RE-EVALUATION
In line with the latest developments, it has been decided that a new bone marrow sample will be taken from Murat Çalık. The procedure is planned to be carried out at İzmir City Hospital.
CHP's Çağla Biçer made the following statement regarding the matter:
"Regarding our Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık, the result of the bone marrow biopsy previously performed at Katip Çelebi University Hospital reported a blast rate in the 4–5% range. However, this rate was recorded as 3–4% in the Council of Forensic Medicine report.
