The 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Istanbul was felt throughout the Marmara Region.

The earthquake, recorded off the coast of Silivri in the Sea of Marmara, caused great panic. Citizens poured into the streets.

Following the earthquake, aftershocks ranging in magnitude between 3.5 and 5.9 were recorded.

Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made a new post on his social media account regarding the earthquakes in the Sea of Marmara.

In his statement made at 14:14, Görür noted the following:

"There are many earthquakes occurring in the Sea of Marmara in Istanbul, on the Kumburgaz fault. Of varying magnitudes.

These are not the major earthquake we are expecting in the Marmara. These are increasing the stress accumulated by this fault. In other words, they are forcing it to break. The real earthquake here will be larger and over 7.

An earthquake is a subject too important to be discussed only when it happens. We need to talk about it and take precautions when there is no earthquake. First the government, then the municipality and the public must join hands to prepare the city for an earthquake. Urban transformation and building construction are not the same as preparing a city for an earthquake. An earthquake-resilient city is a completely different thing. Now the public must do what is necessary. What they must do is oversight and inspection."
