The X account of CHP's presidential candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has been blocked from access in Turkey.
Imamoğlu, who has been detained in Silivri Prison since March 23, had been sharing his views and assessments on current events through his account on X.
While reactions to the censorship against Imamoğlu poured in, a statement also came from X management.
In the statement, it was said, "While we are complying with Turkey's decision, we absolutely do not agree with the decision and are appealing it."
"Failure to comply with these decisions leads to serious sanctions, including the restriction of the entire platform in Turkey," the statement continued, adding, "While X is complying with the court order, it is challenging the court order because we believe that keeping the platform accessible in Turkey is vital for supporting freedom of expression and access to information, especially after natural disasters and other emergencies."

"The decision to block access from Turkey to the X account of the Istanbul Mayor, who is currently detained, has been notified to X. While we are complying with Turkey's decision regarding the account, we absolutely do not agree with this decision and are appealing it. In the spirit of full transparency, we are sharing the court order and our appeal to the court against the decision below.
The court order was notified to X by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority. These access blocking decisions require X to block the content in Turkey, and the content remains accessible in the rest of the world.
Failure to comply with these decisions leads to serious sanctions, including the restriction of the entire platform in Turkey. While X is complying with the court order, it is challenging the court order because we believe that keeping the platform accessible in Turkey is vital for supporting freedom of expression and access to information, especially after natural disasters and other emergencies.
In the spirit of a fair trial, we review all access blocking decisions by taking local laws into account. When these court orders are not in accordance with the principles of freedom of expression, fair trial, or other local laws, X challenges access blocking decisions, including government requests, to protect users before the courts and will continue to do so."
