Breaking News: Yılmaz Tunç's statement on İmamoğlu: 'The investigation is being conducted entirely by independent judicial authorities'

Speaking about the investigation launched over allegations of 'corruption' and 'terrorism' in which 51 people, including Ekrem İmamoğlu, were arrested, Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç said, "The investigation is being conducted entirely by independent judicial authorities. It is unthinkable for the investigative authority, having become aware of the allegations in question, not to initiate an investigation after learning of them."

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç spoke at a press briefing held at the Istanbul Dolmabahçe Work Office, attended by representatives of international media organizations.

 

Yılmaz Tunç's statements are as follows:

In both investigations, 51 out of 106 people have been arrested, judicial control measures have been issued for 41 suspects, and apprehension procedures are still ongoing for 14 suspects.

From the moment the detention procedures began, certain circles in the public sphere have attempted to pressure the investigative authority without knowing the content of the investigation, without seeing the allegations and defenses, and without having any information about the evidence, trying to portray the judicial investigation as one conducted with political motives.

In this context, they have made accusations against our President that exceed the boundaries of respect. They have tried to associate the judicial investigation with our President. We reject these statements in the strongest terms.

The investigation is being conducted entirely by independent judicial authorities. It is unthinkable for the investigative authority, having become aware of the allegations in question, not to initiate an investigation after learning of them.

Everyone should know that in a state of law, if there is an allegation that a crime has been committed, the place where the defense will be made is not the streets, but the judicial authorities. If there is evidence that a crime has been committed, expecting that the necessary investigation will not be conducted regarding this is incompatible with the principle of the rule of law.

Giving an account and making a defense before the judiciary is a right for everyone, and at the same time, a necessity.

We do not find it appropriate to engage in disinformation regarding investigations or to make statements aimed at misleading the public.

During the investigation phase, the allegations, defense, and evidence will be evaluated, and when the confidentiality of the investigation is lifted, the material truth will be clarified with all evidence, both for and against, and the result will be seen by the public in a transparent manner.

It is necessary to trust the impartial and independent Turkish judiciary. The avenues for seeking rights within the judiciary are open to the end, and judicial proceedings are subject to internal oversight.

It is our common responsibility to follow the process calmly and to respect the decision to be made for the full and complete manifestation of justice."
