Buca Mayor Görkem Duman arrested

Buca Mayor Görkem Duman, former Buca Mayor Erhan Kılıç, and former CHP Buca District Chair Çağdaş Kaya have been arrested and sent to prison as part of a corruption investigation into Buca Municipality and its subsidiaries in İzmir.

The İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had issued detention warrants for 62 suspects as part of a corruption investigation into Buca Municipality and its affiliated subsidiaries.

On June 1, teams from the Provincial Security Directorate's Financial Crimes Bureau conducted simultaneous operations at addresses identified in İzmir, Ankara, Erzincan, and Çanakkale. A total of 54 suspects were detained in the operations, including Buca Mayor Görkem Duman, former Buca Mayor Erhan Kılıç, deputy mayors, former CHP District Chair Çağdaş Kaya, managers and employees of municipal subsidiaries, as well as some company owners and contractors.

The 54 suspects, whose interrogations were completed at the Provincial Security Directorate's Yeşilyurt Service Building, were transferred to the İzmir Courthouse under heavy security measures following their processing at the police station. After their statements were taken by the prosecutor's office, 51 suspects, including Mayor Duman, were referred to the Duty Criminal Judgeship of Peace with a request for arrest, while 3 suspects were referred with a request for judicial control.

Mayor Duman arrested

Due to the high number of suspects, the interrogation process at the Duty Criminal Judgeship of Peace was carried out in two separate sessions.

Of the 22 suspects who appeared before the judge in the first group, 19 were arrested, while 3 were released under judicial control.

Subsequently, the statements of 13 more people in the second group were taken.

The court ruled for the arrest of 9 people in this group, including Buca Mayor Görkem Duman, former Buca Mayor Erhan Kılıç, and former CHP Buca District Chair Çağdaş Kaya. 4 people were released under judicial control.
