Afyonkarahisar Mayor Burcu Köksal, who left the Republican People's Party (CHP) to join the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), made her first public appearance under her new affiliation. While attending a book fair held in the city, it was observed that Köksal moved accompanied by security personnel throughout the program.
The security cordon surrounding Burcu Köksal throughout the event and the guards who followed her every step sparked debate among the local public. The security personnel who never left the mayor's side were interpreted as additional measures taken following Köksal's transition to the AK Party.
SECURITY REQUEST
According to information obtained, it was learned that Burcu Köksal had not officially requested police protection prior to her party change. It was stated that during that period, the mayor's security was handled by a retired Turkish Armed Forces personnel who served as a municipal police officer and was reported to be her husband's nephew.
REACTION FROM CHP
Her joining the AK Party had drawn harsh criticism toward Burcu Köksal from the CHP and the public. CHP Deputy Chairman Gökan Zeybek had commented on the mayor, stating, "She will end up in the same situation as Aydın Metropolitan Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu. She will not be able to go out on the street or look people in the face."
