Unbelievable incident in Bursa: Screw pierced patient's brain during implant treatment

Ramazan Yılmaz (40), a 2-child father working as a factory worker in Bursa, went to a private dental clinic in the Nilüfer district for dental treatment. The doctor, A.D., who examined him, told Yılmaz that his teeth were loose and needed to be extracted.

He recommended implants to replace the extracted teeth. Accepting the treatment upon the doctor's advice, Yılmaz sat in the chair once more for the implant after his tooth was extracted.

Allegedly, after the doctor's improper intervention while trying to place the implant into the jaw, the screw pierced Yılmaz's jawbone and lodged into his skull. After Yılmaz, who was in agony, fainted, Doctor A.D. took an X-ray, saw the screw in the skull, and immediately dropped Yılmaz off at a hospital in his own vehicle.

After a tomography scan at the hospital, the doctors, unable to believe their eyes, immediately took the father of two into surgery. Yılmaz, who returned to life after an operation that lasted for hours, waited for days to be discharged. When Yılmaz, who regained his health, called the dentist who had performed the improper intervention, he experienced a second shock. When the doctor refused Yılmaz's request for a refund of the payment he had made, Yılmaz turned to the judiciary.

Describing what happened to him, Yılmaz said, "After the discomfort in my teeth, I went to a private dental clinic in Nilüfer. As a result of the examinations there, I was informed that my bone structure was thin, my teeth were loose, and that the procedure would involve implants. The doctor told me that he was a physician with 24 years of experience and an expert in this field. We trusted him and left this work to him" said.

"HE PERFORMED THE IMPLANT ON THE SAME DAY"

Stating that the doctor did not listen to him despite his warnings, Yılmaz said, "Later, while he was extracting my teeth and performing the implant application on the same day, he told his secretary that the device he used in the procedure was broken. This time, he started to perform the procedure by hand. I noticed that he was applying excessive force while trying to place the screw.

I told him about this, I expressed that I heard a bone sound. But this time, he told me that this was normal. But while he was forcing the screw, the screw pierced my jawbone and lodged into the area behind the eye socket where the cerebrospinal fluid is located. When I screamed due to the pain, he had an X-ray taken" he said

"HE DROPPED ME OFF AT THE HOSPITAL AND LEFT"

Claiming that the doctor dropped him off at the hospital and fled, Yılmaz said, "When he realized the seriousness of the situation, he brought me to the Emergency department of Uludağ University Hospital and left. After the examination conducted here, it was seen that the screw had lodged into the area where the cerebrospinal fluid is located.

Later, specialist physicians came together and decided on surgery. Before the surgery, they told me that I could lose my life. I said my goodbyes and made peace with my children. Thank God, I came out of the surgery safe and sound. During these processes, the dentist was never by my side to resolve my grievance, and he did not even refund the fee I paid. Moreover, he spoke to me as if he were mocking me. All of these are documented.

I want the authorities and our state leaders to look into this matter. I have two children. If something had happened to me, who would have accounted for this? Now we have entered the litigation process. I have filed a complaint against him," he said.

On the other hand, speaking about the accusations against him, Doctor A.D. stated, "Such an incident occurred due to a medical complication. He has applied to legal channels regarding this matter concerning me, but I did not have such an attitude" he said.

Meanwhile, the successful surgery by the doctors who restored Yılmaz to health has entered the literature in America and became the subject of journals.
