Following the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu in a dawn operation on March 19 and his arrest on corruption charges on March 23, Turkey is experiencing turbulent days.
Developments in the fields of politics, the judiciary, and the economy have also stirred the corridors of Ankara. Nefes Gazetesi columnist Nuray Babacan brought what is being discussed in AKP circles to her column today.
Accordingly, internal debates rising within the AKP, uncertainties regarding the course of the case against İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, and the business world's concerns about the future are among the prominent items on the agenda.
In her article titled "AKP in a spiral of anxiety," Babacan stated that pro-AKP trolls are reacting to AKP politicians who remained silent on the operation against İmamoğlu and noted that there are significant disagreements among them, adding:
“This team is pinning its hopes on documents they expect to be added to the İmamoğlu file later. Because it is also being discussed in AKP corridors that the case file is empty. There are many who say, 'We cannot convince anyone with these.' Some are commenting, 'We are receiving information that there will be new witnesses, and many things will change after that...'”
“WILL ELECTIONS BE HELD IN THE COUNTRY FROM NOW ON?”
Babacan claimed that business leaders are also anxious due to the trustees appointed as a result of the operations against the İBB. Babacan used the following expressions: “While these things are happening in Istanbul, AKP economic officials are holding a meeting with business leaders. The appointment of trustees to companies has created serious fear. AKP members had difficulty convincing business leaders who said the same things could happen to them for simple reasons. Some even asked more assertive questions, such as, 'Will elections be held in the country from now on?'”
In the continuation of her article, touching upon the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey's (TCMB) interest rate hike, Babacan noted the following:
“During the same period, expectations regarding the Central Bank's decision to raise interest rates were also widely discussed. Politicians closely monitoring the developments expressed that the Central Bank would keep interest rates stable to calm the crisis and that they did not expect an increase. But their calculations did not hold up.
They had concerns about the political consequences of raising interest rates. They had commented, 'Every step we take means underlining that the political decisions we have made are wrong. They will use this as a trump card. Everything will go back to square one.' What happened after the decision showed that they were right.”

In the final part of her article, Babacan reported that AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told his staff at the party's latest Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting, “Why are young people taking to the streets? Let's have research conducted on what their demands and requests are.”
