Call from the ÇEKÜL Foundation regarding the legislative proposal: 'The right of stray animals to live in healthy shelters must be protected'

The ÇEKÜL Foundation (Foundation for the Protection and Promotion of the Environment and Cultural Heritage) has issued a press release against the legislative proposal that includes the killing of stray animals by injection.

In its press release, the foundation stated that instead of encouraging administrations to take holistic measures, the legislative proposal usurps the right to life of animals. It emphasized that sterilization efforts should be initiated immediately and called for the protection of the right of stray animals to live in healthy shelters.

The ÇEKÜL Foundation's press release:

We object to the legislative proposal regarding stray animals, which is being brought to the agenda as a problem! The first article of the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights states, “All animals are born equal before life and have the same right to existence.”

The statement in the legislative proposal that “It is not possible to prevent the increase in the population of stray dogs in the current situation, and measures must be taken before this issue turns into a public health problem” is not a solution-oriented approach, but is aimed at stripping a living being of its right to life.

According to the proposal, which also includes regulations regarding the euthanasia of stray animals:

Every municipality will take photos of dogs up to the capacity of their shelters and publish adoption advertisements on their websites.

A 30-day waiting period will be observed for the adoption of each dog.

Dogs that are not adopted at the end of 30 days will be euthanized by injection.

New dogs collected from the streets will be brought into the shelters vacated by the euthanized dogs, and the process will be operated in the same way.

The legislative proposal, instead of encouraging administrations to take holistic measures, usurps the right to life of animals.

Instead, sterilization efforts must begin immediately. The right of stray animals to live in healthy shelters must be protected!
