Campaign launched against brown marmorated stink bug pest
In the Tirebolu district of Giresun, a campaign has been launched against the brown marmorated stink bug, a pest that threatens hazelnuts and other fruits and vegetables. An extermination team formed by the Tirebolu Chamber of Agriculture, in cooperation with the District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, sprayed houses and abandoned buildings in the village of Örenkaya. Chamber President Erim Yaman stated that a licensed pesticide with a 15-day residual effect is being used to neutralize the pest as it prepares for winter. He emphasized that they aim to expand the campaign to serve as an example for the entire country.

A team formed by the Tirebolu Chamber of Agriculture, in cooperation with the District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, sprayed houses, barns, and abandoned buildings in the village of Örenkaya. District Chamber of Agriculture President Erim Yaman told reporters that they have launched a significant campaign against the stink bugs.
Stating that the pest has begun to enter areas where it will spend the winter as the weather cools, Yaman explained that they declared war on the brown marmorated stink bugs by forming a team.
Yaman, who is also the President of the Giresun Chamber of Agriculture Coordination Board, pointed out that the stink bugs will be exterminated in the areas they try to enter to spend the winter, stating, "The pesticide has a 15-day residual effect. It is a pesticide licensed by our Ministry. A guarantee has been given that stink bugs that come to the exterior of the house and make contact with the pesticide within 15 days will die. Thus, the stink bugs trying to enter will be exterminated."
Yaman said that the cost was covered by the Chamber's budget and that they carried out the spraying upon the request of the village headmen.
Expressing that as the Provincial Coordination Board, they will meet with the district chamber of agriculture presidents and ask them to implement the same practice, Yaman emphasized that success in fighting the pest can be achieved as the efforts expand.
Underlining that they want the struggle they have started against the stink bugs to set an example, Yaman said, "We hope that our war will spread from here to the whole country and that we will be successful against this pest, because hazelnuts are indispensable for our region, and we are determined to take every step to eliminate any plague that will harm our hazelnuts."
Ali Kara, the headman of the sprayed village of Örenkaya, also said that the brown marmorated stink bugs were showing high density on the exterior walls of the houses.
