Çanakkale shaken by 4.6 magnitude earthquake; first statement from Ahmet Ercan

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Biga district of Çanakkale. The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that the tremor, recorded at 16:09, occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers.

The earthquake was felt in Çanakkale as well as in surrounding provinces.

"NO NEGATIVE SITUATION"

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated after the earthquake that field operations had begun. Minister Yerlikaya said, "As of now, there is no negative situation. We are monitoring the developments."

In a statement made by AFAD, it was noted that field scanning work is ongoing, adding, "There is no negative situation."

FIRST STATEMENT AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan made a statement regarding the earthquake in Çanakkale.

In a post on social media, Ercan said the following:

"The Biga-Çan fault is a branch of the Edincik fault, which comes from Erdek and extends into the Gulf of Edremit. The earthquake-generating potential of this branch is between M6 and 6.2.

The M4.5 earthquake that occurred today in Biga at a depth of 7 km is not destructive.

In 1983, an M6.1 earthquake occurred with a destructive power of VIII, resulting in 3 deaths. There is no cause for concern."
