Çetin Doğan was hospitalized: First statement from his wife

Nilgül Doğan, the wife of 84-year-old retired General Çetin Doğan, who is imprisoned in the February 28 Case, reminded that her husband has been forced to spend more than half of the last 14 years of his life in three different prisons as part of “various cases whose political nature is clearly evident.”

"IT IS OF A NATURE THAT COULD CAUSE HIS DEATH"

According to the report in T24; Nilgül Doğan stated that the medical report prepared by the Council of Forensic Medicine for Çetin Doğan has been waiting at the Presidency for a year, saying, “What my husband experienced over the weekend is of a nature that could cause his death. The life sentence imposed on my husband as a result of an unfair trial conducted with a political motive has effectively turned into a death sentence.”

In her statement, Nilgül Doğan noted that her husband, Çetin Doğan, who is held at the İzmir F-Type High-Security Prison, suffered severe chest pain at 23:00 on the night of March 1.

Stating that Doğan could not reach the emergency button in his cell due to the pain, his wife reported that he owes his life to two sublingual pills he was able to take without losing consciousness.

"HE WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE HOSPITAL AT 2 AM"

Regarding her husband's hospitalization, Nilgül Doğan said, “Until the emergency room physician could arrive at the prison, Çetin’s blood pressure had risen to 22, and he was subsequently transferred to Buca Seyfi Demirsoy Hospital around 01:00 that same night. As a result of the preliminary examinations conducted there, it was deemed appropriate to transfer him to the Cardiology Department of Ege University Hospital, and the transfer was carried out around 02:00 at night.”

Stating that a stent was placed in his gallbladder as a result of the treatment he received at Ege University Hospital, his wife noted that Doğan’s examinations for a second treatment are ongoing.

"HE HAS BEEN FORCED TO SURVIVE ALONE IN A CELL"

Doğan continued her statement as follows:

“My 84-year-old husband has been forced to spend more than half of the last 14 years of his life in three different prisons due to unfair decisions rendered within the scope of various cases whose political nature is clearly evident. For more than the last two and a half years, he has been forced to survive alone in a cell at the Buca F-Type High-Security Prison. His various chronic illnesses that pose a vital risk, including heart disease and high blood pressure, have already been confirmed by numerous official and private medical reports, primarily by the Council of Forensic Medicine.

"HE SUFFERED STOMACH BLEEDING TWICE"

Following the April 2023 report issued by the Council of Forensic Medicine regarding my husband, which confirmed his permanent illness and senility, the procedures for initiating the process under Article 104/16 of the Constitution (remission of sentence due to permanent illness, disability, and senility) were completed ex officio by the Ministry of Justice in May 2023, and the file regarding my husband was sent to the Office of the Presidency. However, for some reason, this painful process has not been completed to this day. During this time, my husband has suffered stomach bleeding twice. What he experienced this weekend due to his critical health condition is of a nature that could almost have caused his death.

"THE EXECUTION OF THE DEATH PENALTY..."

Today, I am speaking on behalf of my family. The death penalty was abolished in our country 20 years ago. However, the life sentence imposed on my husband as a result of an unfair trial conducted with a political motive has effectively turned into a death sentence. Unless a decision is made within the scope of the duties and powers granted to the President by the Constitution, the execution of the death penalty will take place the next time he cannot press the call button in his cell or cannot be rushed to the hospital in time.”
