Expressing his reaction to the house arrest decision by saying "Shame on you," Özel stated the following:
"The detention order for journalist Özlem Gürses and her being held in Ankara, where she had gone to receive an award, and brought to Istanbul was already a shameful enough situation.
And now, house arrest…
A complete eclipse of reason, conscience, and law.
For the court to make this decision based on a single inverted sentence is, beyond just persecuting a female journalist for the sake of tension and polarization, once again disgracing our country before the whole world in terms of human rights violations and pressure on the press.
You have done this to Turkey as well.
