CHP Chairman Özgür Özel made a statement in Saraçhane, Istanbul, following the detention of Ekrem İmamoğlu. Özel described the events as a "coup." He announced that the primary election scheduled for March 23 will not be cancelled. He stated that alongside the ballot box where CHP members will vote, a "solidarity ballot box" will be set up for all citizens.

Özel said, “On Sunday, ballot boxes will be set up in 81 provinces and districts. One ballot box will be for CHP members. Next to it, there will be a solidarity ballot box. Anyone who believes in democracy and is concerned about the future of their country can vote in this ballot box.”

Calling on citizens to participate in this process, Özel stated, “March 23 will no longer be just a day for the CHP, but a day for the struggle for democracy.”
