Hürriyet columnist Abdulkadir Selvi, known for his proximity to the government, targeted Republican People's Party (CHP) Şanlıurfa MP Mahmut Tanal in his column, stating: "Mahmut Tanal visited FETÖ members to show his support when the state seized Zaman newspaper, which was a FETÖ media outlet. He even shed tears there out of sadness. He had his own people film this and then released it."
Tanal's response to Selvi was swift. Sharing on his X account, Tanal posted the article Selvi wrote in 2013 for FETÖ ringleader Fethullah Gülen, titled "Teacher, come back to Turkey now."
Tanal included the following statements in his post:
"This nation knows very well to whom you surrendered your pen in the past and to whom you surrender it today! You haven't let my name drop from your lips for three days. You are slandering, distorting, and trying to smear me. But the archive is still there! You are the one who wrote an article in 2013 telling Fethullah Gülen, 'Come back and lead us, teacher!'"
