CHP's Günaydın reacts to operations against municipalities: Not a single AKP municipality

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) convened under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker Pervin Buldan. The General Assembly is expected to discuss the Draft Law on Amendments to Certain Laws Regarding the Effective and Efficient Functioning of the Judiciary, publicly known as the 12th Judicial Package. Before moving on to the discussions of the proposal, group deputy chairmen made evaluations regarding the agenda.

CHP Group Deputy Chairman Gökhan Günaydın noted that the political agenda of the ruling bloc and the public are different, stating, "For example, families of martyrs and relatives of veterans are holding a protest here at Güvenpark. Our Chairman is currently visiting them with our deputies. I suggest that you also visit them with a group of deputies.

They are showing their orthotics and prosthetics, saying, 'Our relatives were martyred for this country, we became veterans, but instead of being supported, we are being hindered.' The Republican People's Party has submitted 18 legislative proposals on this issue, and they continue to wait in the silent corridors of the Parliament.

Private school teachers are saying, 'The exploitation we are subjected to has reached an unbearable level; we cannot even earn minimum wage, and we work long hours.' Is there anyone in these orange seats who hears them?" he asked.

Criticizing the operation carried out against Çankaya Municipality, Günaydın stated the following:

"You had previously conducted operations against 33 of our municipalities; this was the 34th. 24 of our mayors are in custody. There is no word we have not said in these halls and on the streets of this country.

We are aware that our words do not reach you, they reach our people, but look, do you know whose words I will use to address you?

I am addressing you with the words of academic İzzet Özgenç, who wrote the Turkish Penal Code with you in 2005, the author of the TPC. He says: 'The way to inspect municipalities is through inspectors. Even if there is a suspicion of a crime, you send an inspector there and wait for the inspector's report. The only exception is the state of flagrante delicto; only in the case of flagrante delicto do you enter there with law enforcement. Other than this, raiding a municipality with law enforcement and collectively arresting mayors who have no suspicion of flight and public officials who have no suspicion of tampering with evidence is not legal, it is political.' Look, we said the same things; this is İzzet Özgenç saying this, perhaps you will hear this. Let me say it clearly: 34 operations against CHP municipalities, 24 in custody; to date, there has not been a single operation against an AKP municipality, no one in custody, so these figures are enough to show the extent to which what you are doing is political."
