CHP's Ağbaba responds fiercely to corruption allegations by AKP's Gökçek

A heated debate over "tenders, rent-seeking, and corruption" took place in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) between CHP deputies Ali Mahir Başarır and Veli Ağbaba and AKP deputy Osman Gökçek.

When AKP Group Deputy Chair Özlem Zengin claimed during her speech that the AKP government stands with the people, CHP Group Deputy Chair Ali Mahir Başarır reacted to Zengin.

During the ensuing debate, Başarır pointed to AKP İzmir Deputy Şebnem Bursalı and AKP Ankara Deputy Osman Gökçek, who were sitting next to Zengin, and said, "It is clear that you stand with the people, judging by the two deputies next to you. One is the deputy who shared a lobster in Monaco, and the other is Osman, who grew up with him."

Later, taking the floor, AKP's Gökçek alleged that CHP Group Deputy Chair Ali Mahir Başarır and Veli Ağbaba had "profited through the municipality" in Mersin.

Gökçek claimed that the Toroslar Mayor, who was not renominated by the CHP, had appeared on television and said, "Veli Ağbaba is eating all the rent from this place."

AĞBABA RESPONDS FIERCELY TO RENT-SEEKING ALLEGATIONS

Taking the floor, CHP's Ağbaba lashed out at Gökçek, saying, "Whoever has eaten from public property, whoever has had a single morsel pass through their throat, may it be forbidden and cursed. Whoever has enriched themselves by taking a square meter of rent from the state or the public, there is no one more dishonorable or unscrupulous than them.

Whoever has any relationship with any municipality in Mersin for rent, or has any involvement in any permission, or does business, they are also dishonorable; there is no one more unscrupulous than them," he said.

"IS THIS MAN'S FATHER A THIEF OR A FETÖ MEMBER?"

Ağbaba then asked Gökçek the following questions:

"What do you do for a living? Your father (former Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Melih Gökçek) was the General Manager of the Social Services and Child Protection Agency, Mayor of Keçiören, then a deputy, then the Mayor of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality. Whoever has become wealthy in politics from being a deputy—whether they are CHP, HDP, AK Party, or MHP—is a thief.

His son is also a thief, the son of a thief. How did you win the mayoral election one after another, brother? You cursed at everyone every day. You are insulting people. Where did you get this money? You explain it. Where did your father get it, where did you get it? I am addressing the AK Party Group.

Dear AK Party Group Deputy Chair Özlem Zengin, is this man's father a thief or a FETÖ member? Give an answer to that. Whoever has enriched themselves with public property—not just me, but my entire lineage, my mother, my father, my siblings—is dishonorable and unscrupulous. Those who use this allegation are also dishonorable and unscrupulous."
