Citizen who reacted to Instagram ban decision arrested

Dilruba K. has been arrested after expressing her reaction not only to the Instagram ban decision but also to the legislation regarding stray animals and Turkey's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention.

Instagram was blocked in Turkey on August 2, and the platform was reopened on August 10 following an agreement reached as a result of negotiations with Instagram and META officials. While the decision sparked controversy, Dilruba K. also expressed her reaction to the decision in a street interview in harsh terms.

"YOU CANNOT JUST SHUT IT DOWN OVERNIGHT WITHOUT PROVIDING ANY JUSTIFICATION"

In the interview she gave, Dilruba K. used expressions such as, "There are influencers who use social media. 90 percent of Turkey, and even the world, now makes a living through Instagram. You cannot just say 'I shut it down, it's done' overnight without providing any justification." Dilruba K. had also reacted to the closure of Instagram following the banning of Haniyeh messages.

ARRESTED

Ozan Çakmakçı, the owner of the channel named Tüylü Mikrofon where the interview was conducted, announced that Dilruba K. had been detained.

CHP Deputy Tuncay Özkan also expressed his reaction to the development, stating, "You are trying to make citizens unable to speak on the street. This pressure is oppression. Taking Dilruba at 10 o'clock in the morning and referring her to the courthouse for saying these things is cruelty. We will see how much of the rule of law remains in Turkey based on this decision. In interviews that only include opinions in line with the message intended to be conveyed, citizen opinions reflected as if they were the voice of the general public or the view of a large segment of society lead to disinformation with their objective-lacking, purposeful, and steering side."
