İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department Chief İsmail Derse was the subject of claims that he had been dismissed following the forest fires. Both forestry teams and fire department crews had been responding to forest fires that have occurred in the Karşıyaka, Urla, Menderes, Ödemiş, Bayındır, and Tire districts of İzmir since August 15.

In a statement made by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality regarding the claims, it was stated that these allegations do not reflect the truth and that the department head had decided to retire.

"The reports reflected in the press and to the public regarding the dismissal of our İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department Chief, Mr. İsmail Derse, do not reflect the truth. Our Department Chief has decided to retire and has left his post of his own volition. We thank Mr. Derse very much for the services he has provided to our fire department to date and wish him health and well-being in his future life."

İsmail Derse, for his part, announced that he had submitted his retirement request in a post on his social media account, stating, "With the justified pride of having performed my final duty with seriousness, I have submitted my petition to the office of the İzmir Metropolitan Mayor, leaving 32 years behind with beautiful memories."
