İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay, who resigned from the CHP, has clarified allegations that he had made contact with the party's officials in İzmir to join the AKP.
Speaking to egeligazete.com regarding the allegations, Tugay said, "I have no such intention; the votes of the people of İzmir are entrusted to me. I will continue on my path while maintaining my respect for them. There is absolutely no such situation."

Rejecting the claims that he had met with figures from the AKP's İzmir organization, Tugay stated, "I have never had such a request. We have not held any meetings in this direction with anyone in any way. As a continuation of the decisions I have made politically before, I am currently continuing as an independent."

Stating that he is following the developments within the CHP, Tugay said, "I am following the process regarding the political future of the Republican People's Party. I have a job, I have a duty. I am focused on the mayoralty."

Commenting on a new political formation, Tugay said, "Currently, no new party has been established. I am looking at the Republican People's Party voters and their will. I am watching where the process goes to continue in the healthiest way possible. As you know, there is no new party right now. It is not right to talk about this while there is no new party."

Emphasizing that he is continuing his duties as an independent, Tugay continued his words by saying, "After all, there are people who trusted us and gave us these duties, there is our public."
