Communications Directorate's propaganda text leaked: Criticized for 'mimicking North Korea'

An economic text sent by the Communications Directorate to the local press has drawn backlash for claiming that the Turkish economy has reached record levels while ignoring the difficulties citizens face in their daily lives.

The Regional Directorate of the Communications Directorate praised the state of the Turkish economy in a "propaganda" text sent to the local press. The text listed claims such as the increase in Turkey's economic power, reserves reaching record levels, inflation falling, and the stock market hitting record highs. However, the positive narrative in the text contradicts the reality of citizens struggling in daily life.

In the text presented under the title "The Turkish Economy at a Historic Turning Point," it was claimed that the highest reserve levels in the history of the Republic have been reached, that inflation has been falling continuously for 14 months, and that the stock market has climbed to new peaks. Furthermore, it is stated that Turkey's credit rating has increased and that it is resilient against external shocks. However, these successes claimed in the text contradict the real contraction in the economy and the cost-of-living problems experienced by the public.

CLAIM OF HISTORIC INCREASE IN CENTRAL BANK RESERVES

The Communications Directorate's text claims there has been a historic increase in Central Bank reserves. It is alleged that reserves, which were at the 98.5 billion dollar level in May 2023, rose to 176.5 billion dollars as of August 2025. This is described as "the most concrete indicator of the confidence in the Turkish economy." However, such data is seen as a controversial claim when compared to the decline in the public's purchasing power and the crisis in the economy.

PUBLIC REALITIES NOT ADDRESSED

The text's claims regarding investments in the earthquake zone do not align with the realities experienced by the public. Many citizens in the earthquake zone still face difficulties in accessing food, clean water, and healthcare services. The Communications Directorate states that 3 trillion TL (75 billion dollars) has been spent on earthquake relief in the last two years, but the impact of this aid on the daily lives of the public is limited. The daily rising cost of living, unemployment rates, and deepening poverty create a contrast to the claims in the text.

CLAIM OF "HISTORIC IMPROVEMENT" IN CURRENT ACCOUNT DEFICIT

The text states that there is a "historic improvement" in Turkey's current account deficit and that a current account surplus is expected by the end of 2025. However, tensions in the economy, exchange rate fluctuations, and high interest rates indicate that such claims do not reflect the truth.
