Constitutional proposal from Mehmet Metiner that sounds like a warning to Erdoğan: 'Among our nation's priority demands...'

Former AKP MP Mehmet Metiner has issued a call to AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding the ongoing debates over a new constitution.

The AKP, which lost the March 31 Local Elections, has brought the issue of a new constitution back to the agenda.

In this direction, Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş has been gauging the pulse by holding meetings with political parties.

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated in his speech at the 2024-2025 Judicial Year Opening Ceremony that “Turkey is ready for a new constitution.”

In recent days, HÜDA PAR Chairman Zekeriya Yapıcıoğlu, a junior partner in the People's Alliance known for his proximity to Hezbollah, used expressions that openly targeted the 4th article of the Constitution of the Republic of Turkey.

Following Yapıcıoğlu's statements, constitutional debates have flared up again. 

Former AKP MP Şamil Tayyar, in a post on his social media account, emphasized that the public's most important problems in opinion polls are the cost of living, unemployment, refugees, and competence/merit, stating, "The demand for a new constitution does not even make it into the top 20." 

Following Tayyar, a similar statement came from another former AKP MP, Mehmet Metiner.

Issuing warnings to his party, Metiner called on AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to "shelve the constitutional debates."

"IT WILL DISCREDIT THE AK PARTY AND LEAD TO RIFTS WITHIN OUR PARTY"

Mehmet Metiner, in a statement on his social media account, said, "This proposal of mine is for our Reis, who is the leader of our political movement and our President," and expressed the following:

"The point I will make and propose is this:

Currently, there is no demand for a new constitution among the priority demands of our nation.

Furthermore, the current political climate appears too fragile and dangerous to handle a new constitutional debate.

Constitutional debates held before economic problems are solved, before our AK Party completes its return to its founding spirit at a structural level in the new era, and before our own political house is cleaned up, will both discredit the AK Party in the eyes of the masses and lead to irreparable, deep rifts within our own party.

In order not to harm the process, I see it as a matter of urgent importance for both the future of our party and the social peace of our country to remove the new constitution issue from the agenda until the problem areas I mentioned are eliminated."

"SHELVE IT"

Metiner had said in a post on his X account the day before, "I believe that constitutional debates in this climate will bring more harm than good. It could also lead to rifts within our AK Party. That is why I suggest shelving it."
