Deaths from counterfeit alcohol are rising

In operations carried out across 7 provinces centered in Ankara targeting the production and sale of counterfeit alcohol, 155 suspects were detained and 35 people were arrested. While deaths due to counterfeit alcohol continue, the number of patients in serious condition has also increased.
56 OPERATIONS CONDUCTED
As a result of approximately 3 months of work by teams from the Ankara Provincial Police Department's Anti-Smuggling Crimes Branch, 56 operations were conducted against individuals producing and selling counterfeit alcohol. The operations covered the provinces of Konya, Düzce, Eskişehir, Niğde, İzmir, and Istanbul, in addition to Ankara.
In these operations, a total of 155 suspects were detained, while 35 people were arrested and sent to prison. 37 people were released under judicial control conditions. During the operations, teams seized 19 thousand 935 bottles of counterfeit alcohol, 7 ethyl alcohol distillation boilers, 240 tons of ethyl and methyl alcohol used in the production of counterfeit alcohol, and 7 thousand 63 materials used in the production of counterfeit alcohol. These materials, estimated to have a market value of approximately 150 million lira, were among the products posing a serious health threat.

The number of people who have lost their lives due to counterfeit alcohol has risen to 65 since December of last year. The treatment of 15 people who are intubated in hospitals continues.
