Court application filed to cancel CHP convention: Investigations cited as grounds

It has been reported that 3 people, including former Hatay Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and CHP member Lütfü Savaş, have applied to the court for the cancellation of the CHP convention. It was stated that Savaş and the 2 individuals accompanying him cited ongoing investigations as their grounds.
50 people, including the CHP's presidential candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, have been arrested and sent to prison on charges of terrorism and corruption. While the investigations continue, the CHP decided to hold an extraordinary convention to prevent the appointment of a trustee to the party.
Savaş requested a cancellation decision for the extraordinary convention following the convention where Özgür Özel was elected chairman. It was announced that Savaş and 2 unnamed CHP members also filed an application for cancellation with the Civil Court of First Instance regarding the extraordinary convention following the elective convention.
Özel announced last Friday that the CHP will hold an extraordinary convention on April 6, 2025. Özel emphasized that the decision was taken to 'block attempts to appoint a trustee to the party' and to 'guarantee the primary election where the presidential candidate will be determined.' It was stated that 4 people have applied to the court for the cancellation of the extraordinary convention decision.
LAWSUIT AGAINST CHP CONVENTION
Savaş filed a lawsuit for the cancellation of the Republican People's Party (CHP) Ordinary Convention held on November 4-5, 2023. The lawsuit filed against the CHP included allegations that pressure was exerted on delegates and various promises were made during the convention process.
In the petition, it was claimed that some delegates were given houses and vehicles in exchange for their votes, large amounts of foreign currency were distributed at the hotels where they stayed, and job guarantees were promised. While Savaş requested the cancellation of the convention, he also demanded the removal of the current administration. He further stated that he would present evidence and witnesses to the court.
CONVENTION INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
While the debates over the convention in the CHP continue, new developments have occurred in the investigation initiated by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and expanded by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. In the investigation announced in February 2024, allegations that various promises were made and money was offered to delegates to influence voting preferences at the convention were investigated.
It was stated that 40 people have filed lawsuits for the cancellation of the convention so far and have presented evidence to the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. It was announced that Lütfü Savaş is among those who filed the lawsuit.
In the petition submitted to the court on February 14, 2025, by his lawyer Onur Yusuf Üregen on behalf of Lütfü Savaş, it was stated that Savaş had met with delegates and investigated various allegations following the start of the investigation into the convention process. In the petition, Üregen conveyed that his client believes there were irregularities in the convention and therefore resorted to legal channels.
