Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan was a guest on Flash TV.
In his speech there, Ercan drew attention to the southern branch of the North Anatolian Fault and issued warnings for major provinces such as Yalova, Bursa, Balıkesir, and Çanakkale.
"These are very active and fierce faults. The earthquake magnitudes they can produce rise up to 7.3," Ercan said, adding, "What needs to be done here is to build solid housing on solid ground."
Highlights from Ercan's speech are as follows:
"WE ALWAYS SAY IT"
"We always say that Turkey is an earthquake country. Because Turkey is located on fertile plains, all of them are within fault zones. Therefore, all of our major cities (except for the Eastern Black Sea and Central Anatolia regions) are on first-degree earthquake zones. It is not possible to change their locations. You cannot change the locations of Aydın, İzmir, Bodrum, and Fethiye. What needs to be done here is to build solid housing on solid ground. What destroys structures is the shaking force emanating from the focus of the earthquake.
When we talk about the Marmara region, we always talk about its north. When we say the south of Marmara, the major provinces that come to mind are Yalova, Bursa, Balıkesir, and Çanakkale. The main fault affecting the Marmara region is the North Anatolian Fault. The northern branch of the North Anatolian Fault caused an earthquake in Gölcük in 1999. Its southern branch comes from Akyazı. I have stated that the most problematic places in Turkey in terms of earthquakes are the Düzce, Akyazı, Adapazarı, and Sapanca sections.
"THEY ARE WAITING FOR THEIR EARTHQUAKES"
Because while the North Anatolian Fault comes with a single branch from Bingöl to here, it branches out from here. One of these branches continues as the Gemlik branch. After passing through Lake İznik, it enters the Gulf of Gemlik and goes through Mudanya to Bandırma and Erdek. After Erdek, the name of this fault changes and becomes Edincik. Today, it is striving to cut the Kapıdağ Peninsula, which is attached to the province of Balıkesir, into an island shape. Because the ground is alive. Millions of years later, we will see that the Kapıdağ Peninsula has become an island.
I am talking about the province of Balıkesir here. It is the southern branch of the North Anatolian Fault that affects Balıkesir and Bursa. This southern branch comes through Ulubatlı to Manyas and from there enters the Edremit Gulf from Altınoluk as the Yenice-Gönen Fault. The Edremit Gulf is very important; its north belongs to Çanakkale. There is also the Çan-Biga Fault on it. These are very active and fierce faults. The earthquake magnitudes they can produce rise up to 7.3. They are waiting for their earthquakes."
