Critical warning from municipality after 5.6 magnitude earthquake in Malatya: 'Turbidity alarm in drinking water'

The 5.6 magnitude earthquake that struck Malatya has impacted the city's drinking water infrastructure. Malatya Metropolitan Municipality has issued an emergency warning due to turbidity in water sources, urging citizens to be cautious.

Following the 5.6 magnitude earthquake in Malatya's Battalgazi district, turbidity occurred at the Gündüzbey catchment, the city's main water source. Taking action after the earthquake, Malatya Metropolitan Municipality released an important statement regarding the mains water.

"NATURAL ACTIVITY HAS OCCURRED IN WATER SOURCES"

In the statement made on the municipality's official social media accounts, it was noted that a temporary deterioration occurred in water sources due to the impact of the tremor, stating the following:

"Due to the natural activity in water sources caused by the earthquake, temporary turbidity has been observed in the water supplied to the network. Necessary inspections, checks, and water analysis studies are being meticulously carried out in the region by our teams."

Emphasizing that technical interventions are continuing uninterrupted to protect public health, the municipal administration called on citizens to take precautions:

"The process is being closely monitored to protect the health of our citizens, and necessary technical interventions are continuing without interruption. It is kindly requested that our citizens be cautious in their use of drinking water as a precautionary measure until water clarity reaches normal levels.
