Daron Acemoğlu announces he will support Kamala Harris in the US elections
In the US, 82 Nobel laureate scientists and economists have announced that they will support Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the elections to be held on November 5. Turkish Prof. Dr. Daron Acemoğlu, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics on October 14, also expressed concerns that Donald Trump's election could hinder progress in fields such as science, technology, and climate change.

According to a report by The New York Times (NYT), scientists who have won Nobel Prizes in fields such as physics, chemistry, medicine, and economics have written a joint letter stating their support for Harris in the US presidential race.

The 82 scientists, including Turkish Prof. Dr. Daron Acemoğlu, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics on October 14, expressed in the letter their concern that if Republican candidate Donald Trump becomes president, he could hinder progress in areas such as science, technology, and climate change.
The letter, which states that this election is the most important presidential election to date for the future of both the US and the scientific community, praised Harris for being aware that the increases in living standards and average life expectancy over the last 200 years have largely occurred thanks to developments in science and technology.

The letter also commended Harris for recognizing the role immigrants play in the development of science and technology.
Columbia University professor and Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz, who drafted the support letter, drew attention to Trump's proposals for cuts to science budgets and his anti-science rhetoric, stating, "I hope this will be a wake-up call for people."
