Date for CHP's 39th Ordinary Congress set: All eyes on the Party Assembly meeting

Following the temporary suspension of the Istanbul Provincial Administration by the decision of the Istanbul 45th Civil Court of First Instance, the Republican People's Party (CHP) is preparing to announce the date for its 39th Ordinary Congress just before the hearing regarding the 38th Ordinary Congress on September 15.

Following the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu on March 19, the Republican People's Party, which has been struggling on one hand with operations targeting mayors and municipal bureaucrats, and on the other with allegations of irregularities regarding the party's 38th Ordinary Congress held in November 2023, has spent the week working to determine its political roadmap after the Istanbul 45th Civil Court of First Instance temporarily suspended the Istanbul Provincial Administration at the beginning of the week.

Evaluating the decision from Istanbul and the potential outcomes of the case to be heard at the Ankara 42nd Civil Court of First Instance on September 15, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel and party officials focused on the view that by announcing the date for the 39th Ordinary Congress, they could prevent the potential decision expected on Monday, September 15, from having political consequences.

In this direction, it was decided that the date of the 39th Ordinary Congress would be determined at the Party Assembly meeting, which was announced to be held on Tuesday, September 9, the day the party's anniversary will also be celebrated.

According to the information received, the party leadership will bring the proposal to hold the Ordinary Congress in the second half of November to the PA meeting. Following deliberations in the Party Assembly, it is considered certain that the CHP's 39th Ordinary Congress will be announced to take place in the third or fourth week of November.

CHP officials argue that by announcing the date of the Ordinary Congress before the hearing on September 15, they will prevent the decision from that court from having a political impact, and that regardless of what the decision is, holding an Ordinary Congress in November cannot be prevented.
