The first hearing of the trial regarding the elevator accident at a dormitory building in Aydın, which resulted in the death of university student Zeren Ertaş, has been held.
The hearing at the Aydın 2nd High Criminal Court was attended by 5 defendants, 4 of whom are in custody, as well as Ertaş's relatives and the lawyers for the parties.
The defendants, who did not accept the charges during the hearing, claimed that they had no responsibility in the incident.
Claimed to have done his job with integrity
M.Y., the owner of the inspection firm, argued that he did not disable the mechanism that prevents the cabin from moving in an uncontrolled manner.
H.T., the owner of the company that installed the elevator, claimed that he performed the installation in accordance with the project, used high-quality materials, and "did his job with integrity and delivered it."
Engineer H.A., who submitted his defense in writing, claimed that the expert report was prepared incorrectly and that he had no responsibility regarding the field of work.
Engineer U.I. also argued that he did not take part in the project phase of the elevator where the accident occurred and that the signature on the project did not belong to him.
Hearing adjourned to April 2
Ertaş's mother, Serpil Ertaş, stated that her daughter had been stuck in the same elevator shortly before the incident and that despite the problem being known, it was not addressed, adding that she filed a complaint against those responsible.
Following the defense of the lawyers for the parties, the court panel decided to conduct an on-site inspection of the accident area and to hear the officials of the company that previously maintained the elevator, adjourning the hearing to April 2.

In the elevator accident that occurred on October 25, 2023, at the Güzelhisar Girls' Dormitory, 22-year-old Zeren Ertaş, a student at Adnan Menderes University's Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, lost her life. Within the scope of the investigation, the official of the elevator maintenance company, the owner of the company that installed the elevator, and 2 engineers were arrested.
In the indictment, prison sentences ranging from 3 years to 22.5 years were requested for the 4 detained defendants, and from 2 years to 15 years for the defendant who is not in custody.
