Birgün executives were detained on the grounds of reporting on the Sabah newspaper's visit to Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek in his office. The visit in question had been reported by Sabah newspaper. Koç, Gültekin, and Gökdemir were accused of "Targeting individuals involved in the fight against terrorism."

DEM Party Co-Chair Tülay Hatimoğulları, who reacted to the detention decision, shared a post on her X account.

Hatimoğulları wrote the following on her social media account:

“How can a news report that was published in Sabah Newspaper and was not a crime become a crime for BirGün employees?

This is clearly a dual legal system! This is creating a criminal element out of journalistic activity to intimidate opposition journalists. We do not accept the intensifying pressure on opposition journalists. Democracy cannot be mentioned in a country where the press is not free! Journalists Uğur Koç, Berkant Gültekin, and Yaşar Gökdemir must be released immediately.”
