Sırrı Süreyya Önder (62), a DEM Party Istanbul MP and member of the Imralı delegation, passed away on the 18th day of his treatment due to multiple organ failure after being admitted to intensive care following surgery for a heart condition.
In the message from Öcalan conveyed by DEM Party sources, he stated, "He had an unforgettable diligence and industriousness for the sake of living together in peace. He possessed a masterful skill in turning all experienced negatives into positives. He was a true identity of peace and a culture of peace."
Sırrı Süreyya Önder was playing an active role in the DEM Party during the process described by the public as the 'new solution process,' which began with the call from MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli and continued with the call made by PKK terrorist organization leader Abdullah Öcalan to the PKK to "dissolve itself and lay down arms."
Önder, who was one of the members of the 'Imralı delegation' alongside Ahmet Türk, Tülay Hatimoğulları, Tuncer Bakırhan, Pervin Buldan, and Cengiz Çiçek of the DEM Party, was among those who announced Öcalan's historic 'Call for Peace and Democratic Society.'
Abdullah Öcalan's condolence message is as follows:
"IN MEMORY OF DEAR SIRRI SÜREYYA ÖNDER
A deep sorrow has fallen upon our hearts with the passing of dear Sırrı Süreyya Önder. He was a very valuable person, a true son of the peoples. The Anatolian and Turkmen tradition has lost a great son, and all the communities and peoples of our geography have lost a great comrade. I hold his memory in great respect. On February 27, during our last meeting, he had personally noted down the final sentence we added to the call we were going to make, and he wanted to read it himself. He had an unforgettable diligence and industriousness for the sake of living together in peace. He possessed a masterful skill in turning all experienced negatives into positives. He was a true identity of peace and a culture of peace.
He knew very well that peace and the peace process would benefit us all, and this was his great longing. This hope can never be left unfinished. What is important for all of us is to carry this spirit to peace and to crown it with the name of Sırrı Süreyya Önder.
Once again, I express my eternal commitment to his memory; I offer my condolences to his valuable family, friends, loved ones, and all our peoples.
May we all have our condolences."
