DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan made a notable call on the 99th anniversary of the execution of Sheikh Said and his companions. In a post on his social media account, Bakırhan stated, "These pains, which have left deep marks on the memory of the Kurdish people, should not be covered up," and requested that the grave sites be shared with the public.
“WE MUST ESCAPE THE DILEMMA OF DENIAL AND REBELLION”
In his statement, Bakırhan argued that Turkey must confront its past:
“Turkey must now emerge from the dilemma of denial and rebellion. Recognizing the pain of this people is the first step on the path to peace. The grave sites of Sheikh Said and other Kurdish leaders must be disclosed.”
TURKEY HAD WITHDRAWN ITS TROOPS FROM IRAQ
Sheikh Said, who launched a rebellion against the Republican regime in 1925, also had an indirect impact on the critical negotiations Turkey was conducting with Britain over Mosul and Kirkuk during the same period. Turkish troops deployed to the Iraqi border due to the rebellion had been forced to change fronts to suppress the uprising.
