Departure tax for travel abroad increased

With the decision published in the Official Gazette, the departure tax for travel abroad has been raised from 500 liras to 710 liras.

WILL BE VALID UNTIL JANUARY 10

Departure tax stamps purchased at the 500 lira rate, which were valid until the end of this year, will remain valid until January 10, 2025.

The departure tax will continue to be paid through the Revenue Administration's Digital Tax Office and mobile applications, as well as through the internet and mobile banking applications of authorized banks.

PRINTED TAX STAMPS ARE BECOMING A THING OF THE PAST

With the widespread adoption of digital applications, printed tax stamps are being phased out. The Revenue Administration (GİB) had recently sent informative messages to citizens regarding the regulation that will take effect on the first day of the new year.

GİB HAD SENT A MESSAGE TO CITIZENS

The message stated that departure tax payments could be made via the Digital Tax Office or the GİB Mobile application, as well as through banks' online services, PTT, and kiosk devices at airport departure gates.

Additionally, informative posters were hung at Istanbul Airport to notify citizens that printed tax stamps would no longer be used. The posters read, "Pay your departure tax easily! Payment by stamp ends as of January 1, 2025. You can easily make payments via the digital tax office, GİB Mobile, contracted banks, tax offices, and airport counters."

WHERE WILL THE DEPARTURE TAX BE PAID?

The following sentences were used in the SMS sent to citizens by the Revenue Administration:

"Dear taxpayer, as of 1/1/2025, the practice of paying the departure tax by purchasing a tax stamp is ending. You can pay the departure tax via the Digital Tax Office at digital.gib.gov.tr or the GİB Mobile application, through the online channels of authorized banks, at PTT, at kiosks at airports and exit gates, and at tax offices. Have a good day. Revenue Administration"
