Detention order for Kadıköy Municipality Council President: Investigation had been launched

A detention order has been issued for CHP Kadıköy Municipality Council President Ahmet Kurtuluş. It was alleged that Ahmet Kurtuluş had turned off the microphone of AK Party Council Member Elif Lale Bilgili, who was speaking on International Women's Day on March 8, and had remarked, 'Let's throw her out.'

The third session of the Kadıköy Municipal Council's March meetings was held under the chairmanship of the 1st Deputy Council President Ahmet Kurtuluş.

A dispute broke out between the CHP 1st Deputy Council President Ahmet Kurtuluş and AKP Group Deputy Chair Elif Lale Bilgili. During the argument, which arose due to time restrictions, Kurtuluş first turned off the microphone of AKP council member Bilgili and said, "Let's throw her out." An investigation was launched by the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office due to Kurtuluş's remarks.

A detention order was subsequently issued for Kurtuluş.

Taking the floor during the meeting, AKP Group Deputy Chair Elif Lale Bilgili stated that CHP Council Member Süleyman Şahin, who spoke before her, had made remarks suggesting that "bribery has become commonplace." Later, Bilgili, who described Turkey's investments in the field of health, also mentioned the work done for women on the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8.

As Bilgili's speech continued, 1st Deputy Council President Kurtuluş intervened, stating that each speaker had a five-minute time limit. 

Upon this, Bilgili reacted, saying, "Why is there a time restriction on my speech? We are about to complete our first year, and such a time restriction has never been imposed on anyone until today; why is it being imposed on me? Either my microphone is turned off or a restriction is imposed, why? I listened to you. Didn't I listen to all the criticisms made against the government? I didn't even open my mouth. Why can't I explain what our government has done?"

"LET'S THROW HER OUT"

Reminding Bilgili that her time had expired, Kurtuluş turned off her microphone. When AKP Council Member Bilgili reacted to this situation, Kurtuluş asked the technical team to cut the live broadcast.

Following the ensuing argument, Kurtuluş said, "This is not how it works. This cannot be. For God's sake, let's remove her, let's throw her out. We have finally reached this point."

Bilgili reacted to these words and left the hall.

CHP İstanbul PROVINCIAL PRESIDENCY TAKES ACTION

CHP İstanbul Provincial President Özgür Çelik announced that an internal party disciplinary process has been initiated against Kadıköy Municipality 1st Deputy Council President Ahmet Kurtuluş due to his remarks directed at AK Party Group Deputy Chair Elif Lale Bilgili.

In a post on his social media account, Çelik stated, "An internal party disciplinary process has been initiated against our council member due to his remarks directed at an AK Party female council member during the Kadıköy Municipal Council meeting. We present this to the public's information."

PRESIDENT ERDOĞAN: "THE FEBRUARY 28 MENTALITY STILL PERSISTS IN THE CHP"

President Erdoğan also reacted to the footage. Erdoğan stated the following:

"There is no basis for the main opposition's claims regarding the Istanbul Convention. They cut off our AK Party member's speech at the Kadıköy Municipal Council and threw her out. That is why we say it is not the convention, but the law that saves lives. The attitude toward our female council member shows that the February 28 mentality still persists in the CHP."

DETENTION ORDER ISSUED

An investigation was launched by the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into Kadıköy Municipal Council President Ahmet Kurtuluş due to his remarks regarding AKP council member Elif Lale Bilgili.

A detention order was subsequently issued for Kurtuluş.
