The Rectorate of Istanbul University has announced its long-awaited decision, and the undergraduate diploma of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has been cancelled.
The decision drew a flood of reactions from both politicians and citizens. One of those reactions came from DEVA Party Chairman Ali Babacan. Babacan said, "I am very sad and angry on behalf of my country. I convey my best wishes to Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu and hope that this erroneous decision is reversed immediately."
Making a statement via his social media account, Babacan shared the following:
"I am very sad and angry on behalf of my country.
We are witnessing yet another blatant example of attempting to design politics through administrative and judicial power.
The decision to cancel Ekrem İmamoğlu's diploma is a decision taken by disregarding the fundamental principles of administrative law, legal certainty, and the security of administrative acts.
It is a cautionary tale that those who were once oppressed, when they become powerful, apply the same treatment they were subjected to, and even worse, to others.
I convey my best wishes to Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu and hope that this erroneous decision is reversed immediately."
