DEVA Party Founding Board Member Metin Gürcan arrested on espionage charges

Metin Gürcan, who was detained as part of an investigation conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, has been arrested by the court to which he was referred.

DEVA Party Founding Board Member Metin Gürcan has been arrested and sent to prison as part of an investigation conducted on charges of "political and military espionage."

It was stated that Gürcan was placed under technical and physical surveillance by Counter-Terrorism Branch teams during the investigation carried out by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. Gürcan, who was detained in Istanbul, was taken to the Ankara Counter-Terrorism Branch Directorate for processing.

It was reported that Gürcan, who gave a statement to the police, touched upon his military background and said that he had been providing consultancy services regarding various countries to individuals and institutions that requested them since 2017. It was learned that Gürcan argued that the information he shared within the scope of these services was compiled from publicly available sources, that he did not engage in espionage activities, and that he did not share classified documents.

It was noted that in his statement, Gürcan mentioned that he held regular meetings with diplomats in Ankara, provided them with analyses, and received payments in return for these services.

After police procedures, Gürcan was referred to the Ankara Courthouse and brought before the Criminal Judgeship of Peace with a request for arrest by the prosecutor's office. The court decided to arrest Gürcan on charges of "political and military espionage."
